I just hit 10k mi last month and haven't noticed the clunky shifting quite as much. Though, I've been in normal mode more than sport more often now. I do feel the shift can sometimes be a bit rough from 5-6 in normal, but not as clunky as what I felt when it downshifted hard from 2-1 in sport.

What fluids did you use? I was thinking the same thing for my Ranger - start simple. My previous 04 Ranger was a manual and had issues with getting in gear and popping out randomly. I ended up having poor/low fluid. Drained and filled with new stuff. It never had an issue after that.
Just noticed this for the first time with my XLT. Came to a stop and felt a hard downshift in sport mode. Pretty sure the rear wheels locked up. I think it happened 3rd to 2nd. Only 600 miles on it so far. Currently 48 degrees F.
