I know they don't want to develop this technology but if they included the hardware so the car could do it when using 3rd party hardware like Comma AI.

I for one would love to see the slate be compatible with Comma.AI, it does not mean that slate needs to do the R&D or even have the compute built in to acomplish some self driving tasks. But it should have some of the required sensors since it will have auto braking, and likely have electric steering.

Slate just needs to play nice with Comma to make it happen instead of activly getting in the way like some other MFGs who would rather you buy their proprietary tech in a new car.

Guaranteed if you are involved in any accident and they find this crap in the vehicle, all insurance claims for vehicle damages and property damages to others will be DENIED. Along with your policy being cancelled. Add on devices not installed by the OEM will affect your accident liability. Same as if it was determined you were not wearing seatbelts and become involved in an accident. Collision damages and property damages to others, Denied. However, no-fault insurance may pay your medical bills. Insurance companies will find any and every excuse not to pay out claims. Let's not help them in their cause.

And let's not forget that little black box (event data recorder) in virtually EVERY vehicle that records all this stuff. Just saying.

you are absolutly correct that installing it would put the liability on the driver, but that doesnt mean that we shouldnt be able to make the decision as the owner of the vehicles. Its not much different than adding high horsepower mods or lift kits that drastically change the vehicles performance characteristics.

People are terrible drivers, and autonomus vehicles are getting better every day. So to be able to add some, even not tightly integrated autonomy could prevent some crashes and make the vehicle more pleasant to drive.

I have not experienced comma ai, but Ihave driven thousands of miles with driver assist tools and have always driven them with heightened attentiveness. It is still much more pleasant to use those tools even for my daily commute. I would welcome the option, even if it is an aftermarket option.

Nobody is asking for them to come with Slate. Just the option to be compatible after market. No different than asking for the engine block to be able to be worked on, rather than sealed and locked from the consumer.

As others have said, this would be an aftermarket accessory that just uses the existing hardware in the truck to function. Think of it as a lift kit, performance tuner, or aftermarket radio, not something that Slate needs to build into the truck as a factory option that would increase costs.

All that we are asking is that Slate not prevent us (by locking down the software) from installing it if we choose to do so.

if Slate is going to allow us to install rear seats and airbags (SUV Kit) on our own then they should not have issue with us adding driver assist systems. DIY is what is exciting about Slate.

If the cruise control fails (eg. over-accelerates), the manufacturer is at fault. The user/driver is not at fault. In this case the CC is a system installed by the manufacturer. If the CC is an after market mod and the manufacturer allowed it to interface with their vehicle, both the CC manufacturer and the vehicle manufacturer are at fault. The failure of the combined system is the peril, not the driver. Same goes for self-driving software.
