Happy to report that openpilot works on the 2024 Ranger for hands of wheel driving goodness. You need a truck with adaptive cruise control and that's it.

^ not my video

Install is moderate, have to plug in behind gauge cluster (video: )

It works well enough, some software/tuning is still needed and comma seems to be buying a F150 to get it dialed in fully. Ford is the only company who has road curvature, etc CAN bus signals expected to the PSCM so it isn't as easy as just sending EPS torque commands like all other models (Ford is built from ground up for autonomy).

I'm really loving Ford's Adaptive Cruise, the automatic speed limit is A++ and it works better than Chrysler, Toyota's systems.

Been contributing to openpilot since 2019 and it's so cool to have a truck now with it, should make those long haul camping trips that much more fun. Only a matter of time until Ranger gets TRON (CAN bus encryption, booo).

Do you have better performance on Blue Pilot instead of Sunny Pilot? The git doesn't seem to be as active. Curious what other functions it provides over Sunny Pilot.

I run Bluepilot, although stock openpilot just got support on the master branch. We should see greater and greater controls quality as comma gets up to speed.

Radar parser just got added too! https://github.com/commaai/opendbc/compare/master...blue-genie:opendbc:q4-radar

Exciting time for Ford owners

Hey, excited to see more forum members installing this tool. After someone posted it a while back I was almost going to pull the trigger on it, but after using ACC on some long trips I started to second guess if the price tag and installation effort was worth the upgrade.

As far as I could tell, the difference in factory ACC and comma/openpilot is just that it also integrates GPS into the standard ACC features of adaptive cruise & lane keep to create a true "self-driving" experience. I think another small QOL feature is the device also doubles as a dashcam.

Are these two features essentially all you get with it beyond what we have from the factory? Or is there more that I'm missing.

It can do quite a bit more -

Red light / stop sign detection and handling for example. Not sure if this is available on the Ranger immediately, but I know it's available for some other vehicles running Open Pilot.

It can better manage speed and centering through curves. I think there's also assisted / auto lane changing.

More features are in the pipeline too, it's updated constantly and has very good community support. I think if nothing else, it's just an awesome project to support.

Nice! It's really cool to see open source projects like this.

I may start thinking about it again as it gets fleshed out more. When I was seriously considering it 6-8 months ago, they were basically asking me to be one of the first beta testers and figure out ranger installation on my own without many existing resources available. I wasn't quite willing to be that guinea pig this early on a brand new truck.

I would imagine it works on the Raptor as well, correct? I am interested in giving it a try.

I would like to know exactly what you ordered, and did you connect in the mirror box, obdii, and dash? Thank you in advance.

Compatibility with this is one of the reasons I went with my 24 ranger raptor.

Took it on an 8,500 mile road trip from the east coast through colorado, utah and wyoming last September. We drive stragiht from new england to colorado in about 30 hours taking shifts and open pilot is the only way it's possible. This way we have more time in the mountains. Did this towing a home made 2,000 lbs fully loaded camp trailer.

Previously did this with our subaru. The ranger (and raptor in particular) opens up a lot of exploration. Did the alpine loop in the San Juans and a bunch of the 4x4 roads in Arches, Shafer Canyon Road in Canyonlands / Moab, Hurrah pass, etc.

Highly recommend open pilot, and works well with the ranger raptor thanks to efforts of those working on blue pilot. It's not even comparable to the stock lane keep. I use the stock ACC and don't mess at all with traffit lights / stop signs for now.

For ford, blue pilot is a must.

https://comma.ai/shop/comma-3x?make=Ford&model=Ranger%202024

You need a Comma 3x, with a Ford Q4 harness. They have it labeled as "ranger harness" to make it easier to find. The Comma 3x should come with an 8 degree mount when ordered with a Q4 harness. Ranger windshield requires the 8 degree mount.

You need to purchase a USBC extension cable. I used this one. 6.6 ft. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09FDWG61C?ref_=ppx_hzsearch_conn_dt_b_fed_asin_title_3

It doesn't hook up in the mirror box. You need to run the extension from the mirror box down to behind your guage cluster. You install the harness there. There is another wire that goes down to the ODBC port. You can opt to not have the ODBC port I think, but you'll get dash warnings on boot up as the device wont be powered until the car starts up. ODBC provides constant power.

Older cars needed the ODBC to read the fingerprint of the car. Ford passes this via the canbus I IIRC.

Okay this interests me, as part of the reason I didn't invest in this is because most of our long driving will be hauling.

How does Comma/Openpilot switch lanes safely when you are hauling a camper or a trailer, since it is only a forward facing camera?

Saw a YouTuber use a 1.5# wrist weight on the steering wheel and accomplished the same thing with lane assist and adaptive cruise control. Drove hours on the interstate and never touched the wheel.
