Yeah but the owners manual “recommends” 91 octane for optimal performance. Personally, I wouldn’t use 87 except for an emergency, where there is no other available. Only ran into this once in my life at 29 Palms. The highest octane they had was 89 and we were on empty.👍🇺🇸

I can recall seeing 85 octane gas during my many trips between Minnesota and Las Vegas Via the Eisenhower tunnel. They sell less octane gas because of the altitude I can also remember seeing it at higher altitudes in Utah. But the 85 octane came about because it was cheaper and back then most CARBURETOR engines tolerated it.

Arguing about octane needs with a retired USAF service member is probably not wise. I don’t know what his MOS (Military Operational Specialty) was but I would bet every member of the USAF knows the importance of the correct octane level in different aircraft.

You should all watch this video By an engineer.

I will have to point out that being in the air force does not make you an expert on octane ratings.
That's like saying the janitor that works at the hospital is an expert on diseases and treatments.

Oh, I wasn't arguing, lol. I was just providing scientific papers from 1950 - 2002 proving him wrong.

Being in the USAF does not an expert make. I mean, I work in the automotive industry for a living, but that doesn't make me an expert. So, I deferred to (the work of) those that are.

Sooo just to add fuel to the fire.... modern ECUs are pretty darn good at managing all the common types of fuel (save E85) that you will encounter at the pump without damaging your vehicle. I would bet you even the performance tune will not eliminate the built in safety protocols designed to pull timing etc.. to prevent engine damage. Now if you want to see all the benefits the tune claims to provide, be sure you need to use premium gas.

the Factory tune has lower boost so 87 is just okay. The Performance tune does much higher boost which makes the min octane 91, no where is 87 octane approved with this tune. Want to keep your warranty you better run 91. With the higher boost you risk predation which is a bad thing for boosted motors.

Soo yes with higher boost and bad gas your are at increased risk for knocking. Luckily your engine has knock sensors and tables for pulling timing should pre-ignition detonation occur. It actually has many tables that constantly adjust timing, boost, and fueling based on lots of metrics not just knock. I'm just saying if you are stuck and can't find 91 your not going to hurt your engine if you have to use 87. Our engines are way too smart to let that happen.
