I want to know what are the differences between the Sport and FX4 packages.

Ford has been using the Sport a lot in its marketing pictures.

I learned from my last Jeep I am likely not to do much off-roading at all, just pavement, NE snow, light gravel.

I know it might be a good value, but really would I need it? I don't even have a harpoon!

On then current gen Rangers all a sport package was is cosmetic stuff.

- magnetic gray wheels
- magnetic gray front/rear bumpers & fender trim

That is it.

Which is perfectly fine, especially if it comes at no extra cost unlike the FX4.

I just feel many people buy these packages who don't need them :)

I bought a Jeep Liberty with light bar and every 4 wheel drive feature imaginable a few years back.

Sadly I hardly used its capabilities commuting to work.

IMO Sport is a way to basically show that you didn't spend the bare minimum on a work truck, but all you're getting is a decal and one or two other cosmetic features.

On the other hand, FX4 is the bare minimum offroader package. Offroad suspension, bash plates, better wheels, terrain management system.

If you don't plan on going offroad, then FX4 is probably a waste. But if you think you may do a bit of offroading, those bash plates could save you a serious headache.

Agreed. My understanding is that the FX4 gets you

  1. Better off-road shocks
  2. bash plates
  3. terrain management system
  4. beefier tires
On a side note, the gray wheels look the same to me in the configurator.

The FX4 package on the B&P tool lists everything you get.

I ordered a xlt sport 4x4, opted not to get the fx4. The few times I may take it off road, it will be on dirt roads or trails. I'm not going to do anything extreme. I may take it back east, so I want to be able to handle some snow.

Not sure what country you guys are in but in NewZealand the sport comes with the bigger 3 litre v6 engine and 4wd. There’s a couple other little things like proper tow hooks and the exhaust ends just after the diff instead of sticking out the back

It’s a matter of choice for the buyer. Personally the upgraded shocks and bash plates make it worthwhile for me. I do limited off road driving but the few times that I do makes it a good add. One thing that is holding me back is the lack of 4A. Winter weather in my area with road conditions changing drastically even in short drives make selecting 2WD or 4WD a guessing game. 4A would take the guess work out of winter driving. Hopefully as the Ranger evolves this option will be more readily available. Just my thoughts but everyone has their own specific needs and wants.

I hear you. The FX4 is a good deal as a package and I commonly see them on the road.

Not sure the 4A is as important for me. Generally I know when I will need 4WD before embarking on a trip. All of these things of course are creature comforts.

Since Ford will require me to have to have key startup on the XLT, I am beginning to rethink everything.

I got the sport for the decal --LOL And because I don't expect to go off road - will stay to logging roads and dirt roads. Also will mostly use 4x4 in Winter snow. With regard to step up from work truck. I could not get the adaptive cruise control on the XL so I had no choice to step up to XLT and base trim in XLT is the Sport. As far as bash plates you can purchase those after-market and I intend to do that - just in case I hit a logging road with actual logs!

Do you have a locking rear differential with your Sport?

I see its a $495 option, which I assume would give you 4Low.

Rear locker just means both rear tires get power even if one wheel is slipping. The 4Lo/4Hi comes with 4WD automatically.
