Installing my Garmin camera with the Dongar cable. Noticed that the vehicle camera housing gets hot. Very hot. Is that normal? There is a vent in the mirror shroud and cooling fins on the housing. It’s 120 degrees with the IR gun

I'm not sure what you mean by 'vehicle camera housing' but in general, for a given camera, the camera body will feel progressively hotter in a multi-camera system as you record: front only; front + interior; front + interior + back. And progressively hotter as you run a given camera view at higher recording resolution and frame rate. It can get quite hot with 3 camera views and 4k front, 1080p for interior and rear. This is part of the reason these cameras require more costly industrial temperature range SD cards.

I do wonder about the longer term reliability of these cameras (the main camera unit anyway) and all this heat, especially in locations like the desert southwest where car interiors in the summer after sitting in a parking lot on hot days can reach 150*F.

Electronics don't perceive temperature on the same scale as people. 48C is nothing for automotive components or even most ordinary electronics these days. I doubt Toyota didn't take temps in the hot sun into account for their components that are going to be exposed to it, the metal cooling fins suggest that they did

Ah, OK. Sorry I misinterpreted your question. So this module you have circled, is this where the four 360 camera feeds and the rearview mirror camera feed and the road sign camera feed all terminate for further processing within this module?

@Vincenzo hey just wondering if you're saying this is post-Dongar install, or are you saying you just happened to notice it while you were installing one of our products? I'm assuming you have our SKU that plugs into your rearview mirror which is a completely different circuit! Let me know if I can clarify anything!

Noticed while installing. Using the 5pin dongle plugged into the empty harness. There are two air vents in the cover. I’m assuming it gets hot but not sure how hot. It was up to 123 degrees

the 360 pvm feeds into the head unit and these camera are about the size of a thumb). this housing includes the forward facing camera which has a bigger aperture and resolution, which is bigger than the pvm camera's since it does heavy duty work.

the digital rearview camera only feeds into the mirror and the head unit uses that same camera for hitch view nothing else (on the tundra it uses the rear view mirror camera to look at the bed)

this is located next to the 3rd brake light, the camera located in the tail gate is used mostly for pvm views.

it does most of the TSS 3.0 duties from the top mounted center windshield camera.

1. Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection
2. Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (in-conjunction with the grille mounted radar)
3. Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist
4. Lane Tracing Assist
5. Road Sign Assist
6. Automatic High Beams (camera detects on coming headlights to turn on/off high beams)
7. Proactive Driving Assist

since the area around the camera opening is completely blacked out and the only thing you can see is the camera, it will absorb sun rays and heat up tremendously
