TLDR:
So if you've aged out of motorsports, but you already miss the race car you just sold along with the F150 that towed it, whaddya do to ease the pain? We'll, perhaps like me, you find yourself looking at all the usual sporty SUV suspects 'cause you need the utility, but have to have some spice as well. But after driving them, you realize they either don't scratch that itch or when they do, they cost truly stupid, stupid money. Coin thats better spent on ensuring you don't have to share a feed bowl with the cat in retirement. So then it occurs to you that perhaps a small, sporty truck, something with some sense of cool, say the Lobo, might work. So last Monday, I walk into a local Ford dealer to give one a shot. Chat a little bit with the sales guy, Frank, who, very old school, tosses me the keys and off I go. But before I do, I mention in passing that I'm really looking for utility with some fun and flavor to it... maybe an Explorer ST or an RR might be interesting as well.
We do the usual 15 minute or so back road and highway loop and ultimately roll back into the dealership impressed, but not totally sold. Nice effort, but both the size and interior finish left me unconvinced. Anyway, as I pulled in, Frank is standing there, doesn't even ask me how I liked the Lobo but instead hands me a set of keys and says 'why don't you do a few miles in that one'... an RR. Only had a few miles of fuel in it, but what there was, was more than enough. My wife is grinning from ear to ear. She wants it. I climb out of the truck and of course now he asks me how we liked it. Only had three words for him. 'You f-in bastard.' So we worked out a deal and here I am.
Little to no intention of any rock crawling, not really a thing here in eastern MA and while, believe it or not, there is a desert nearby, its only a few acres and highly protected, so thats out as well. I do hope to do some ice racing or perhaps some Rallycross if the sanctioning bodies will allow an RR to run... still looking into that. But even if none of the playtime stuff ever happens, I dont really care. I just love the thing for its power, personality, comfort and versatility. Twenty five years of nearly continuous Ford pickup ownership, but after only a few hours of ownership, the RR is already my favorite truck of all time.
Great forum, learned a ton about the truck in the past few days; looking forward to learning a lot more in the coming weeks, months and years. All the best to my fellow Raptor owners. And yeah, thank you too Frank... you f-in bastard.
