Apologies if this is a dumb question, but I've been trying to decide which model of Diamondback cover to go with.

One scenario I'm not really clear on is how it would work if I wanted to haul something tall in the bed next to the tailgate, or have something like lumber in the back resting against the tailgate. With the Switchback, it's a no-brainer that you can just fold it up part-way, but with the HD/SE, would I have to release the gas piston to fold the panel back on itself? If yes, how much of a pain is that to deal with?

TIA.

I have the 270 on my RR and love it. Yes, you can fold back by releasing gas struts which is very simple and easy. For most long items lumber and such I just undo one end of strut and let the lid rest on material on top of tailgate. I was never a bed cover guy but this truck came with it and I don’t know how loved without it before.

That's super helpful, thank you! You might be convincing me to consider the 270... your setup looks great, really functional.

Have you felt limited by the load limit of the 270? And have you ever needed to take it off for any reason? Was it simple to do?

Thanks it has been fun setting it up and customizing it the way I want it. As far as the load limit I’ve not run into a problem yet. I have had several hundred pounds on top of it in totes or Roam type cargo boxes with no problem. I bolted four E-Track tie down plates to the edge so I can strap things to top. I’ll see if I have pictures of it from last years hunting trip where I had it loaded down.

Couldn’t find a photo of it loaded but here is an older pic of the side where I have the E-Track base mounted. It has some shovel mounts plugged in, in this pic.

I had an SE (unless they came out with one, no HD was made for our truck) before getting a topper. I haul lumber regularly, and I just propped it on the tailgate and then simply used a bungee cord to hold the diamondback panel down. For sheet goods I’d close the diamondback and leave the tailgate down. Sheets flat and strapped. I would have kept the diamondback if I still had a trailer, but I kept running into scenarios where taller items, even just simple cardboard boxes, wouldn’t fit under the cover. And more importantly the dog kennel. So I went to a topper.
