Taking off from a stoplight today and the transmission slipped really bad. felt like it missed 2nd or 3rd gear. Had my foot on the gas so it revved up a little bit, when the gear finally caught, it was pretty violent. HARD LOUD CLUNK! Taking it to the dealer today to have it looked at.

Has anyone else had this happen yet? I'm at 2300 miles.

Nothing like that but i do feel like this torque converter has a very high stall. It almost feels like a cvt when taking off sometimes

Same here at times.
I've got 2,700 miles on mine. I only see a shifting hesitation when the motor is cold and I'm giving it a fair amount of gas and it is shifting from 1st to 2nd gear and a little when it goes from 2nd to 3rd gear. After that shifting the first time, I don't have further issues. If I baby it, there is no shifting delay. Not sure if that is related or not. Just an observation I have felt. Note, I do let the cold engine run until the RPM's kick down to around 1,000 after like 15-20 seconds as well. I learned this is a good thing to do esp. with turbo engines.

Ya I always let it warm up before driving. We will see what the dealership says today. I'm sure they will say they couldn't find anything but I want it documented. And if it does it again I will take it in every damn time. A brand new vehicle should not be having transmission slip.

Does this sound like low transmission fluid? Anyone checked?

I have hears about that. Another poster mentioned they got a message for hybrid system failing. When they took it to the dealer they said it was low on trans fluid

Update: Dealership says they found nothing out of the ordinary. They were unable to duplicate the issue and fluid levels look good. It has been documented though which is important in case it happens again.

Yea.. I was getting a feeling that would happen. Unless a failure happens they can't do much about it. Specially the transfluid since they would have to drain it completely to see the issue. Its also not recommended usually to replace transmission fluid so early.

I will try at it too but ask to drive with the tech to point out the issue

You can't really check unless (I think) a dealer uses a scan tool Or the entire fluidd is drained. Unfortunately for this 4runner no dip stick is available for the trans.

Checked with the Master Mechanic at my dealership. He said the new 8 speed is self learning and will take several hours or 2-3000 miles to settle down. It may be clunky or shift high at first and this will settle in as you drive more

From Google:

The self-learning process for a Toyota 8-speed transmission, also known as adaptive learning, can take anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours, depending on driving conditions and the individual's driving style. It's a continuous process, but the initial learning phase, where the transmission adjusts to a new driver's preferences, is typically faster.

Yes, Toyota's 8-speed automatic transmissions, specifically the "Aisin-Toyota 8-speed transmission" (sometimes referred to as the "Direct Shift-&AT"), are designed with a self-learning capability. This system, often called "adaptive learning," uses the Transmission Control Module (TCM) to monitor and adjust shift parameters based on the driver's individual driving style and conditions. This helps to ensure smooth shifting and consistent shift feel over time.

I remember in my e46 BMW (2000) had a similar self learning transmission. We were able to do a reset on the learning when the shifts were becoming "lazy". When it reset, it felt more peppy and the shifts were "harder".
