What Would You Do if The Slate Truck Does Not Manifest?

I actually thought about a Maverick Hybrid and test drove one before I took delivery of my 22 MachE. I hated the feel of the front wheel drive. Price was nice as I would have saved or $10k and could pimp it out without guilt but mehh, Maverick was not for me. I have a real truck, looking for a daily toy truck I can beat on that I enjoy driving.

On the list for a Scout SUV but just do not feel that is happening for me.

Don’t think I’ll refer to mine mine as a toy truck, but just might. Many of us refer to our tractors and other tools as toys. 😁 DYI modding this thing I expect to be a great joy, no guilt.

You actually have a working E53 ?

My 2001 E53 was long gone by 2005 when the repairs became excessive.

The worst were the rear tire camber that wore out 20" tires like TP.

I did love the traction - the 60:40 front rear power was amazing - true road magnet!

Yup, it's currently my daily driver. Mine has the tried and trusted M54 engine so it's super easy to work on and maintain. I'm shocked you claim your E53 was gone in already 4 years of ownership. This era of BMW is one of the best.

What engine did your E53 have? It sounds like you had the 4.4i with the M62tu engine as the 3.0i did not come with 20in wheels. The M62tu are more temperamental, but still quite reliable. I just restored the M62tu in my E38 and now it's good to go for another ~100k before another timing chain guide job.

Wow in a similar comparison, that's like me trying to order a Ford Lightning EV for $39K (Pro trim) but needing all the extra stuff (bells & whistles) for a $100K (Platinum trim).

I ended up with a Lariat trim for $70K

Same- wanted a Pro but ordered an XLT. Great truck, but I didn’t need that much truck. It’s an efficient alternative to an ICE F150, but not the best commuter EV.

For a daily driver I just bought a car made in 2001. That's a much younger car than my previous daily driver (same make and model) made in 1998. Which was younger from my previous daily made in 1997 (same made and model, I bought it in 2007, so it was already 10yo).
Those previous two cars never let me down, just got rusty - salting roads in my area ruins every car in more or less 10 years. They just kept running and running and running (4G63 Mitsubishi engine is absurdly reliable), with no repairs as such, stuck brake calipers being only recurring nuisance.
My car was produced until 2005. I believe when my newest buy will finally give up to rust, it will be impossible to buy it anymore, all will be dead. I need Slate to be around for that moment

As many of us have indicated, the Slate will be a secondary, fun mode of transport for all the local trips which really tack on the miles to our main vehicle(s). If Slate never materializes, I will just keep running my existing car till the wheels fall off.

The Slate truck is the first new car that I've been truly enthusiastic about in a long time. Lets face it, new cars that are ICE or even hybrid just don't excite as they don't push technology further and they require the same old engine upkeep and oily mess we DIYers love to bathe in.

However, if Slate fails to deliver the car, what would you do? If Slate doesn't meet the target price range +/- 3000 USD, what would you do?

I'm sure everyone here has a condition tree like this. Mine stops hard at the price if Slate actually brings the truck to market. If the end result is not reasonably priced, I'll most likely continue driving my E53 X5 as I plan to restore the front and rear end by the end of this year giving another decade of suspension life.

I'll be bummed but life goes on. I've dreamt of a low-cost, mod-friendly, basic car for long enough that I even considered doing one as a startup, so I love the idea and back it 600%. But launching a new car company isn't easy, so I am not going to be too stressed either way!

Life would go on. I'd keep running my ancient mini-truck, and just plan on having the engine, trans, diff rebuilt as they fail. But much rather go to Slate which I'm thinking will be almost zero maintenance. I want a bare-bones truck I can maintain myself that is not subject to emissions-control inspections.

The Maverick isn't on my radar, as I already have one. I love it, but I bought it because there is no small ev truck yet so I went "half-electric". If the Slate doesn't materialize, I'll hope Ford's Skunk Works comes out with their small ev truck that is in the works. I bet the Slate reveal really lit a fire under their asses. It's my guess though that it will be an EV Ranger and probably start at 40K, which would not tempt me from the maverick.

This audience isn’t cross shopping Maverick vs. Slate which is exactly opposite to what most reviewers think is happening.

Actually the maverick is on my list. My first kid will be learning to drive in 2027, so the timing is perfect. I think the slate would be a great vehicle to add to family for local travel. My first car was. Chevy Luv, and this reminds me a lot of that.

The Slate does look like a Luv (see image…I like those four headlights, reminds me of my old 325i). If you need a small pickup and willing to go both Ford and ICE, I can see why you might be looking at the Maverick as well.
