More than just air. Excess crankcase vapours are also redirected into the intake tract to be burned during combustion. These oily vapours are what collect on the intake valves.

It has no positive or negative effective on carbon build-up. When the fuel is introduced in the combustion chamber, the intake valves aren't exposed to fuel (wash).

No idea how he drives or what oil he uses but there is no way that that motor flows the same amount of air that it did when new. Those valves look like shit.

I don't think it's related to the charger. It would have to be a major overcharging situation for that to happen. The last time I had a fuzzy battery post was on a 12 year old battery. It lost it's seal where the post meets the top of the battery. It would off-gas at that area.
