One more question, if there has not been a software update, how likely is it to re-occur? ie what situation(s) seem to be the precursor and how likely are they to occur. And do you know if it has happened much in other Fords?
That's a good question. The issue will continue to persist. There's no real rhythm to this and just seems to quite random. We believe it may happen when the A2B network goes down and up at start-up after the CAN message has said audio on. The processor is then out of sync and hasn't been told to re-sync.
In our product we found that by manually re-syncing the DSP when the system was running fixed the issue. We ended up playing around with the start up timing after the system had stabilised to work around these failings.
The Ford system is a first generation A2B network hence why they used CAN bus to control the DSP. Other manufacturers are running later systems and have A2B control messaging built in and the need for a CAN bus is obsolete but Ford is still running the first gen A2B networks.
It's Ford start up timing on CAN saying 'turn audio on' before the A2B network has started their clocks that is the issue. Try explaining that to a dealer though....
