I recently installed the MBRP axle-back exhaust on my Ranger Raptor. I've always liked the factory exhaust, but I wasn't a fan of how the stock exhaust tips would develop black soot stains on the bottom that were difficult to clean. I also really liked the look of the black tips that come with the MBRP system, so I decided to give it a try.
When the exhaust arrived, I immediately started the installation. It ended up taking longer than I expected because I made the mistake of removing both factory sides at the same time. By the time I went to install the MBRP system, I couldn't remember exactly how the factory exhaust routed underneath the truck, especially on the driver's side. After looking up a few photos of the Ranger Raptor's undercarriage, I was able to get everything back into place, align the exhaust properly, and tighten all the clamps.
Once installed, it looked fantastic. The wide, black turned-down tips really complement the rear of the truck. I fired it up, and the cold start sounded great. It wasn't dramatically louder than stock, but it had a deeper, more refined tone that I really liked.
Unfortunately, once I started driving, my opinion changed. Inside the cabin, the exhaust is surprisingly quiet. Even in Baja mode, I found myself checking to make sure the truck was actually in Baja because it didn't sound like it used to. With the factory exhaust, you could clearly hear the engine and the downshifts inside the cabin, which added to the driving experience. With the MBRP system, most of that sound is gone. Around town, even in Baja mode, it feels more like you're driving in Normal mode.
When you really get on the throttle, the exhaust is a little louder than stock, but during everyday driving it's just too quiet for my taste. For me, a big part of owning a Ranger Raptor is the engaging sound and driving experience, and this exhaust actually took some of that away.
The build quality and appearance are excellent, and if you're looking for a subtle exhaust that's quiet inside the cabin, this may be exactly what you want. However, I think I'll be painting the tips on my factory exhaust black and reinstalling it. As much as I like the look of the MBRP system, I'll probably be selling mine soon.
