Howdy,

Was in the Sand Dunes this weekend with a friend and he had a question about tranny and engine temp monitoring. What are the danger zones for temperatures to watch out for and any tips for avoiding engine and transmission overheating when off-roading in the dunes?

His tranny temps got up to almost 240 and I told him to use manual mode and hold a gear longer to avoid the transmission from slipping so much. As for engine temps we didn’t see anything over 240 degrees. My tranny temps were around 230.

Any tips would be appreciated!

Thanks for the link however that’s not all that helpful for off-roading.
You had 2 parts to your question, was more so about providing links to what the normal temps and stuff are. I dont have much as far as your off road question goes.

It is normal for any transmission to warm up while off-roading. It gets worse with bigger tires and modded (heavier) trucks of course.

General tips I learned so far:
1- keep the front main radiator & trans cooler clean from dirt/ bug/ grime buildup.
2- Keep underbody clean (any hot metal areas such as trans + transfer case + engine/ exhaust) as the airflow on metal helps cool them down
3- Air down (mid 20s for general driving, lower for deep sand)
4- Avoid excessive wheelspin and 2WD power driving. Run 4H not 4A
5- Hold gears and avoid excessive shifting and trans slip
6- Make sure ESC is completely off, i.e. hold the button ESC down until the bar fills and both yellow lights are on
7- (optional) get a bigger trans cooler

If you are bashing on the dunes every weekend in hot weather, changing the fluids at sooner intervals (engine, diff, trans, t-case) helps as well. Not absolutely necessary, but a good practice if you intend to keep the vehicle for a long time.

Honestly the RR is very impressive in cooling capability given its high power nature. Hooning it in 2wd with full air in tires is fun, but generates heat very quickly, so don't be surprised to see temps spike.
