I borrowed the SG3 out of my Sprinter to see how it worked in the new Ranger. I chose ECT, cyl head temp, Trans temp, oil pressure, battery SOC, current battery draw/charge in amps, current gear (only works in forward gears, not park or reverse) and egts at the cat thinking that's as close as I'll get to turbo temps.

Mounting locations are not great, windshield or in the convenience hole. Going to establish some baselines for now, most important will be my top row temps when towing in the mountains and deserts.

I'd really prefer to find something like Torque Pro or Forscan that could be displayed through Android Auto and has the gauges I want, but this will work until I can figure that out, if I ever do.

The battery amps came in handy already. I forgot to disable auto stop/start and I'm so new to the truck I didn't realize it was doing it. I first noticed at one green light I felt a slight bump when I took my foot off the brake but I didn't realize what it was. At the next intersection I was sitting there, AC running and all when I looked at the SG and noticed the battery amps was at a negative 24! Still didn't register in my mind for a minute what the hell was going on, I thought it must not be charging at idle. I put it in neutral and revved it a bit and the amps went positive. That's when I realized it was shutting off. After I hit the cancel button the amps stayed positive for the remainder of the drive. My battery SOC was around 80-83 so why would I want to keep stopping and starting the engine?? 🤔

As soon as I got home I ordered the 4D Tech jumper.

I tried torque pro, but couldn't find oil pressure. Is there an id number associated with oil pressure?

Battery SOC was at 87% when I parked it yesterday, plugged it in and this morning was at 100%. The current dropped to -14 with the door open and the key on, started the engine and it jumped to +40 then started to drop, rapidly at first and after about 3 minutes was at zero.

Since oil pressure shows up on SG3 there has to be a PID but I don't know it. I suspect there is a csv file or something that someone has come up with for our particular engines, I've been reading through the Mustang forums looking for options. I saw someone was using OBD Fusion and I have that so I'll be trying it when I get a chance. I have the app on my phone but I can't remember if it requires it's own specific OBD BT adapter or if it works with any ELM 327.

The one I couldn't find in Torque Pro is transmission temp.

Received my Offroam mount today, I chose the magnetic mount for my Scangauge, it works fine although the magnet is not strong enough to use on a phone with a case but it does hold the SG fine as there is a steel plate on the back. I wish the magnet was as strong as the Scosche mounts that can hold your phone even through an Otterbox.

I also changed the SG3 backlighting to match the Ranger's blue colors.

I also discovered that even though there is an oil temp gauge in the Ranger, there is no oil temp sensor in the engine which means no oil temp can be read by Scangauge or any other live data method. Apparently the oil temp is calculated by averaging out the reporting of several other sensors.

I think the truck oil pressure gauge is another feel good gauge, the bars rise and fall smoothly and evenly as you change RPM but the SG seems to show steps rather than a linear up and down indication like on the factory "gauge". Will know more tomorrow as I'm taking a 250 mile trip.

I won't need the SG all the time, I mainly wanted to be able to establish some numbers on the temperatures in relation to what the idiot gauges are saying, especially the transmission. It's pretty common for factory indicators to be designed to give very little info to the driver until it's almost too late. I think this is partly to keep people from bringing in their vehicles because they think such and such number is too hot.

I'd rather know when things are heating up before I get the dash warning so I can head it off. I'll always use the SG if towing.
