Hi All, had my Ranger Raptor since October last year. It’s always had a really bad clunk when going from Park to Drive or Reverse. I’ve uploaded a video, but it doesn’t really show how bad it is. It’s very loud and you can feel the whole truck move when it does it.

It’s been in and out of Ford for 8 Months, it’s had a new transfer case and a new read diff, but it still does it. The gearbox oil is at the correct level. Anyone else had the same issue? Thanks

are you parking on any bit of an incline? that puts a lot of strain on the parkig pawl that clunks when the pressure is released. if your parking on a incline(truck rolls forward or back once in park a few inches) thats binding the parking pawl. and is bad, try stopping, applying the emergency/park brake then shifting into park. that keeps the strain off the parking pawl.

No, does it on command no matter what I do, where I park, how I park, etc. Just seeing if anyone had a similar issue before as Ford just keep throwing parts at it rather than figuring out what the actual problem is unfortunately

Well it’s been in and out of Group1 Ford in Guildford (highly recommend not using them) for the last 8 months. It’s had a new transfer case an a new rear diff, not solved it. It’s now going into Hendy Ford in Eastleigh to see if they can fix the issue. Will post an update when I get one.

I mean lets cut a bit of a slack to the dealer here. The RR is not an everyday vehicle they service or sell. If they are like my dealer, when I bought mine I was their second one. The current ranger platform is also new, and because of that you dont have a lot of new rangers in general. I am not surprised they didnt know how to fix it, but lets be somewhat realistic.

I park on a bit of an incline. I typically bring the truck to a halt, put it in neutral, then activate the parking break, release foot from break and then put it in park. That way there is no tension on the gears.

I’ll give you some more details and see if you’d cut them some slack:

This dealer sells commercial Ford vehicles and have sold quite a few Raptors. Bear in mind I daily the truck for work and need a replacement vehicle everytime - this dealership is 20-40minute drive away.

January: Arrange to have it investigated with a Tech present initially to show them the fault, Tech isn’t available after turning up, they send out a very young Mechanic, he confirms it’s quite a clunk, need to book it in to investigate further.

February: I book the truck in, they can’t replicate the fault, so I drive there to show them. After showing them they investigate further for a week. I call for an update, they’re waiting on Ford Technical to advise what to do. Another week later I call for an update, still no word. So I pick the truck up rather than it sitting in their yard, I also call Ford UK to put pressure on them to get an answer. I ask did they check the gearbox oil level, they said they did.

March: Ford Technical tell them to replace the Transfer Case, but it’s on a 6 week lead time. I book my truck in for its service (now due) and the transfer case to be replaced.

April: Part arrives, truck goes in. They carry out the service and THEN tell me they’re missing parts. They hold onto the truck for another week before I pick it up again without the parts arriving.

May: All the parts are now there, they replace the Transfer Case, I pick it up, can tell straight away it’s still doing it. Ask if the gearbox oil is correct/needs replacing, was told they checked this again.

June: Truck goes back in again to investigate, they order a rear differential. I pick the truck up again.

July: I told them since June this needs to be sorted as I’m driving to Italy and need the truck for this. They just about get the diff replaced prior to holiday, don’t resolve the issue, I ask if this is a gearbox issue/is it worth changing the oil. They told me they sampled the oil and sent it off.

I then check myself and the gearbox is missing 1L of oil. I top it up an it immediately felt better, not as harsh. Now not trusting them, I took it to Lukos Engineering, he had a look and the truck is now throwing 2 fault codes, that have only appeared since the day I picked it up from having the rear differential installed. When I told the dealership, they phoned and asked where I got the dipstick from in the picture I sent them, as they “couldn’t find it”. So now it’s gone to a different dealership in the hope they can sort it out.

All in all a bunch of incompetent idiots that don’t know what they’re doing.

I mean this story just proves my point though. They dont have a ton of techs or experience working on the truck. There is some stuff to be mad at in there Ill give you that, but obviously they do not have any experience with this truck. Its fine if the sold them, but as I mentioned, not many have issues, so itll still be another year before the fist ones start to need actual service.

I also am not surprised about parts or them missing parts, thats on Ford and geopolitical issues currently with parts availability. Dodge has the same issue with hellcats. There is a Hemi tick, and the part needed to fix it is basically unobtainium.

So I buy a £60k truck from a Ford dealership and When it gets an issue I’m meant to be cool with them throwing parts at it, not being honest about checking the gearbox oil and causing more faults than it originally had?

Parts I understand, that’s out of their control, but the rest is pure incompetence. Not really sure how you proved your point, but each to their own.

Unless dealers are ran differently then the US, Ford does not own the dealers. So its not Fords issue the dealer is bad. My point is more so, new truck, unknown issues, its going to get the parts cannon tossed at it for a bit because no one knows if you are just lucky or if its a normal issue. The dealer sounds like they suck, and thats fine, more so just there are some real world reasons why they may suck or appear to suck.
