If the rails have a lip that sit flush on the caps what difference does the thinkness makes? The tonneau should be flush.
This assumes the clamps are not an issue but how would that be an issue...
Perhaps, just a guess but in another post I showed that now the instructions show the use of shims. Previous owners shared that their instructions did not contain reference to the use of these shims.
Maybe these shims make up for the new rail design?

The shims are to be installed like they are in the picture. They are to be slid in between the plastic bed rail molding and the steel bed rail to prevent the plastic molding from deforming when you tighten the clamp.

A site search did have a reference to tightening the rubber bump stops that turning 3.25 times to adjust.
Wondering if others did or is that's how they close?
