Just installed the S&B CAI on my 2.7 ranger. I’d say I gained roughly 100 whp…..jk. The induction noise is much more prominent and drones out the rattles form the 2.7. Install was a bit tedious but not hard at all

Are there any baffles in the inlet scoop? Any worries about water ingestion during heavy rain or bug buildup?

That’s a good question. Are there baffles in the OEM box? I didn’t think to look when I swapped out mine for an S&B on my RR.

The inlet air path in the stock RR air box is very convoluted, for very good reasons, one is to separate the incoming water. Another is to slow down insect (moths especially) accumulation on the filter element. I would be very hesitant to drive in a heavy rain storm with a CAI that didn’t have any baffles….. I also would worry about using a pressure washer there.

I think that is a valid point. Thus far I haven’t had any issues (that I’m aware of) and I use a pressure washer weekly.
I think I’ll start taking a peek after each wash to see what happens. I do think I recall a video of a guy drilling a hole in the base of the box because he too was concerned of water accumulation.

All air boxes on offroad trucks should have a way for trapped water to exit the bottom. A few small holes drilled at the low points is acceptable,

The Series 80 Land Cruisers use a huge removable “sump” that has a one way rubber drain valve, and it can also be quickly dumped if it gets a bunch of crud in it. And the air enters the top and swirls around the perimeter of the circular “can” to separate out dirt. It is highly engineered and highly effective.

It really bothers me to see wide open filters on any vehicle that is intended to go off pavement …. It is asking for trouble. And it voids your engine warranty if you should get any water issues.

Have looked at the S&B CAI. They look well made. My Ford salesman put one on his 2023 Ranger Tremor and said I should get one. Before I do, asking for some information.

How does a CAI allow more air flow, dry or oil, but also prevent an increase in nasty particles getting into the engine? Is it more filter surface area than OEM? Do all or certain brand CAI throw codes? Do you have to disconnect the battery and then reset anything? If you just want more turbo whoosh sound, why not get an atmosphere venting blow off valve instead? Or both?

Watching that tells me that there are zero intake baffles. Nada. You could literally poke a broomstick through it….

FYI there is a Ford Service letter to replace leaking and deformed washer fluid adapters - if you can even convince your dealer that it is bad. I gave up and fixed mine. If you break yours because it hits an aftermarket air box, they won’t do that for free.

There are plastic inlet guards available on eBay, that could keep bugs, mice and sticks out, but if you are after unlimited airflow, that won’t be satisfactory.

That is not my truck or my video. I was only linking that video for GLW who could (potentially) not find it. My truck is still running the oem intake and will continue to coexist peacefully with rain, moths, and small woodland creatures.

You should be. There was a video out there and it was produced by a company called Donaldson, the inventor of air filtration. It was Intresting to see the findings on non paper filters, not so swell. I have been guilty of installing aftermarket’s in the past, great sound but I could see fine dust in the tubes downstream from the filters.
