Im confused as to how this is supposed to work. I turn it on but it doesnt stay on. There are times when I notice it go on and then off while driving. I go back into the settings and turn it back on again. Is it based on if the headlights turn on or off or some type of light sensor in the vehicle?

Yes. It's attached to the headlight settings. It won't come on unless the lights are on.

OK, thats what I was kind of assuming. But theres also no indication on the dash when my lights are on or off, really annoying. And sometimes the icons in the bottome left corner of the dash disappear alltogether. So I dont know if parking lights or headlights are on or not.

Look at the switch. It's default is automatic on the Raptor every start. Turn it clockwise to on, and they'll be on. Turn it counter two clicks and it's off. No icons, it's in auto/off. I think physical OFF the icon is strikethrough, but I stopped paying attn already.

Fyi - the fancy headlight stuff, like illuminating curves, only seems to happen in AUTO mode.

I have my lights always set to Auto. But sometimes Im driving and the icons are down at the bottom of my dash and then other times they are not showing. However, I never know when my headlights or just parking lights are on. I do have a separate icon for the fog lights but do they only go on when the headlamps are on? Does turning the fog lights on automatically turn on the headlamps? All my previous cars had the icon switch from parking lights to an actual headlight icon when they turned on.

This seems to be becoming more common where there is no change in dash with headlights or or off other than maybe a little icon that glows if headlights are on, but no warning if off. I find this annoying (and potentially dangerous). Funny story on this is my wife and I are frequently on the highway at night and we often see cars with only DRL's on so no taillights, and we laugh saying don't these bozos know their lights aren't on? Well fast forward to a few weeks ago I was driving a rental Hyundai starting at daytime and driving until after dark. Whoever rented it before me had turned off the lights, so Auto did not work, and as the sun set I did not realize the lights never came on. I have had auto headlights for years so never think about turning a dial. There was zero indication that the headlights were not on, and the DRL's were bright enough that it wasn't obvious to me. So here I was one of those dodo's with no headlights on. I finally realized it about an hour into the drive. This stupid car had enough safety features to not allow me to put the car in drive without the seatbelt on (!!), yet I could drive 70MPH in the dark with no headlights on and no warning of any kind. The Nav system was smart enough to change to night mode, so why not at least a ding ding ding - "hey idiot turn on your lights!" chime?

I suspect this Ranger will behave similarly and will certainly miss having actual lighted dials on the dash that soon (if not already) will be a thing of the past.

I'm sure there is a bug in the software. Sometimes the ambient lighting (on) setting survives many restarts. Other times, the system loses the setting after the first restart and it has to be turned on again.
