Its funny you mention the play in the steering on the jeep... my wife drives a 2019 wrangler sport s. My kids don't like driving it because there is about an inch of play in the steering wheel when driving straight. So you are always making minut corrections to stay centered in the lane on the highway.
But, comparing her 2.4 turbo to my ranger's 2.3 turbo and the jeep 8 speed ti the ford 10 speed, the jeep engine and transmission are amazing. The jeep engine is actually made by alfa romeo and comes in the guilia, as well as some other of their vehicles, though tuned down for the wrangler. That motor blows the doors off my ranger from a stop and accelerating on the highway. The jeep will light the tires up from a stop through the intersection, and her jeep is a four door wrangler with heavy aftermarket bumpers and side steps. I am not sure if the ranger can duplicate that without some type of tuning.
The 4 cylinder turbo in the jeep is not as well accepted as their v6 but their v6 has rocker arm issues and class action lawsuit has been started because they fail wipe out the cams. Some people with less than 40k miles had to spend 10k to get the top end redone on their jeep v6.
But, we had already driven the alfa romeo guilia so we knew about how good that 4 cylinder turbo is.
But, now having the ranger and wrangler, we take the ranger on all out of town trips. It rides smoother and quieter than the soft top wrangler with solid axles front and rear. The ranger also get better gas mileage. Both do well though. Way better then my 04 ranger v6 and my previous 2017 nissan titan v8 could ever dream of getting.
The jeep and ranger both have gotten above 25mpg driving to san antonio from corpus christi but the wind really tears up the wrangler on the trip back and the wind noise is horrible.
