In my research looking for sleeping/camping options for the Ranger I came across the Aliner Switchback. Only 375 lbs and 30 seconds to deploy. https://aliner.com/switchback/

Where are you going to keep all your stuff? In the truck cab? In the long run this truck camper will be a PITA compared to their travel trailer which generally sees very little use and can be stored inside with the roof raised. Water, dust and bug leaks! Is it insulated? The drawers are cheaply made and do not even have slides. Don’t plan on driving on dusty roads….

Now why'd you have to bring common sense into the picture John LOL!

I'm just killing time waiting for my late September build to happen and looking at a lot of ideas. We have a small motorhome but sometimes I take short trips by myself and with my F350 I would sleep in the camper shell, but that was 8'. I did send Aliner a question asking if an ice chest and a porta potti would fit inside when lowered although I never had a potti in the F350 but it might be handy.

I really don't need much when I'm on my own and I rarely stay away from civilization and then it's never for more than a day or 2.

I'm still probably going to stick with a standard shell and just get one of these $250 tent extensions for overnighting:

This way the shell will just remain on the truck always as that is what I am used to anyway.

I've tossed the idea of a small trailer around too but probably won't go that route unless we give up the motorhome. I like to travel light myself but the wife needs a real bed, bathroom and kitchen!

I also have to figure out how I'm going to transport my saltwater fishing poles.

I am not sure if the tent would work with that long fishing pole case on top, but if it extended to the rear it would be fine, except that the hatch would hit…

The GFC load bars are dead flat and rated at 200 pound each (static)..

I like it! But it said bed 5.5, my Ranger is 5 foot I believe. Would you just take off the tailgate and let the Aliner just hang over?

You can just leave the tailgate open. You could also remove the tailgate and let the extra 5" hang over. I read a review somewhere where they said it hangs ove about even with the bumper.
