Dashcam Fuse Questions

I looked through some of the dash cam threads and have a few questions:

1. Do I need to disconnect the battery prior to installing a hardwire kit in the passenger compartment fuse box? My inclination is yes, but the manual says it's only needed when servicing high current fuses.

2. Some folks put theirs on the #28 which is a 30a fuse. Would that be safe to use with a dash cam kit that comes with a 2a fuse? My first thought would be to try one that is closer like #35 (5a).

3. Would any of these cause the camera to restart with the auto stop-start?

1. Can’t hurt but no needed. You’re really only pulling and re-inserting a fuse.

2. 35 is my go to and I use this to power my garmin tread

3. Start stop doesn’t impact this. The car is still “on”

I avoided all this and used a OBD2 power cord for my dash cam and works great unless you use obd2 for something else already.

My 2 cents:

1. As long as you do all the wire splicing to the fuse taps prior to plugging them in, then you're fine. The risk comes in grounding a wire out while you're splicing it (while it's plugged in - not wise).

2. If going by the fuse in the fuse slots, fuse #28 is rated for 30A, #35 is rated for 5A - confirm with the manual. Your camera is supposed to pull less than 2A, hence the 2A fuse, anything more and you want that fuse to blow. The circuits fuse won't affect that. That's why you don't put total amount of items that pull more than the circuit's rating or you'll blow the fuse. And why you don't swap out the fuse for a higher rated fuse or wires start melting (or worse). Personally, I'd be more concerned what items are on that circuit and try not to overload that circuit or share with items that might be important not to lose while driving.

3. No, neither of those fuses are affected.
