What are some chassis grounding points that already exist in the engine bay?

My plan is to wire some A-Pillar lights to Aux switch 1. I found the positive wire associated with Aux switch 1, and from what I’ve read, the ground should be attached to the chassis. I’m wondering where an existing chassis bolt is that I can add my ground to. If possible one that doesn’t involve disconnecting the main chassis ground to battery wire.

Any pics of existing wiring set ups or ground point locations would be appreciated

I would just run a wire to one of the terminals on the negative side of the battery. The power for switch #1 is basically next to the battery anyway so you'll have to run wires already.

Use the big bolt that grounds the battery main cable. It is easy to access, just behind the left headlight. I think it is 8mm threads….. First connect a jumper cable with alligator clips to the battery negative post and to another good ground, that way you won’t lose any settings when you remove the bolt..

Or use one of the several small negative terminal screws at the battery itself as suggested by Nate.co.

Appreciate the suggestion. Unfortunately this is not recommended by ford.

Refer to 2024 Ranger Owner Manual page 411. The section on electrical accessory installation advises against this as it could mess with the battery management system.

Thanks for the response, I’ll have to look into that. A couple of questions…

The HT2 stud as shown in this diagram right?

Have you removed this stud before? I’m curious if you know the size of the bolt that goes through the chassis? Also where is another good ground point for the other end of the aligator

This is just saying don't bypass the little battery monitor module on the negative terminal and go direct to the battery at the post. The "note" here is saying that accessories use power.

If you look at the battery, on the negative terminal there's a little box attached. Grounding "after" that box is fine, and you can even see where the frame is grounded directly from that same post.

I've got a winch, compressor and lights connected on top of the bolt marked "usable ground"

Ah that makes more sense, thank you for the clarification. This is perfect btw, exactly what I needed get everything wired correctly.

I was looking at this more (just finishing up a bumper & light bar install) and if you are using switch #6, that location has both a power and a ground. I just used this for a light bar.

That sounds awesome! What bumper did you go with? Been a thinking about getting one my self. As for the #6 switch, that’s good to know as I’d like to add more lights in the future.

Did some more digging too and it looks like #3 and #4 (located at the back of the truck) also have associated ground wires.

I got the Rival Bumper, I've been happy with their skid plates and I like the look (not just a bunch of round tube bends). I'll do a whole writeup once I've tweaked a couple things but:

This is the 20 inch "SR Series Pro" lightbar hooked to switch #6... 17,000 lumens is a lot haha.

That’s a sweet build! Love the bumper and marker lights combo.

I do have one more question. I installed the lights and decided to use the chassis ground point. It sparked a couple times when I removed it. From what I read that might just be left over capacitor charge from electrics that are “always on”. I’m curious if you experienced anything like this or if thats something I should be worried about?

Did you fully remove the chassis ground or just the nut? I have not had sparks.

(I mean, it's probably fine)
