Going Into Reverse Cancels Carplay, Starts Sirius XM

When I’m on a Bluetooth connection to carplay, and I go from any gear selector position besides reverse, into reverse, it ends carplay and goes to my Sirius XM.

Anyone else? 2026. My 2024 didn’t do this lol.

This is a known bug in Ford SYNC 4 and SYNC 4A affecting 6th Gen Rangers and other recent Ford models.

Looks like the root cause is a handoff issue in SYNC 4 / 4A. When you shift into reverse, the system brings up the 360/backup camera feed and prioritizes reverse chimes and proximity sensors. During that interrupt, the wireless CarPlay handshake drops out, and SYNC defaults straight back to native radio, which is usually SiriusXM.

Here are the main workarounds and fixes to try:

1. Plug in via USB-C. Running a wired CarPlay connection bypasses the wireless packet drop during the reverse camera handoff.
2. Do a SYNC soft reset. Hold the Power/Volume knob and the Seek Right (>> / next track) button at the same time for about 10 seconds until the screen restarts.
3. Change your default audio source. Switch the radio over to a dead FM station or another silent input so it doesn't blast SiriusXM when the drop happens.
4. Clear and re-pair the phone:

• Delete the truck under both Bluetooth and Settings > General > CarPlay on your iPhone.
• Remove the phone from Settings > Phone List in SYNC.
• Restart the phone, cycle the truck's ignition, and set the connection back up.

Check for OTA updates. Make sure the truck is connected to home Wi-Fi in SYNC settings to see if there is an update pending, since Ford pushes APIM projection patches over the air.

@donkey were you able to get that sorted out? Once you do the steps above it should resolve itself or if you have it connected via cable, which I do not think you need to do. My is working as it should

Ooooh, have heard of this on a couple YouTube channels but so far has not happened to me.

When I worked in the hardware and software field we stopped calling issues like that bugs and referred to them as features since it somehow managed to manifest into every design even though it had been fixed multiple times. I think the SW teams did it on purpose so they could say they fixed issues.
