How to remove tailgate Ranger Raptor?

Surely there has been a thread about this, Search is useless. I can't find the recommended method, it doesn't just unhook as you would expect it to.

I think it has to be unbolted because of the lift assist spring, which is in tension when the tailgate is open. The owner's manual doesn't mention removal at all. The tailgate on my 5G came off the traditional way, but it didn't have a damper or the spring to deal with.
