My method has always been don't buy it until the original warranty is about to expire. Decide at that point if I'm going to trade in or not. If not, buy the warranty on-line then. If you're getting a car loan it makes no sense to get it from the dealer at a higher cost at purchase and pay interest on it for three years before it's needed. If I've bought it at the 3 year point I will get a rebate if I trade the vehicle in before the extended warranty ends anyway. I always get the Ford plan. The others can use non Ford parts and can argue with the repair shop over cost. Not a good idea to have the repair place ticked off that they aren't getting what they asked before they even start repairing your car.

It doesn't matter when you buy the 'new car ESP'. You can wait 3 years until OEM expires, put the ESP still starts at mile 0, day 1 when you bought the vehicle. If not, then it's a used car ESP which will be higher in price.

EX1: You buy a new truck in 2026, and get the 8yr/125K ESP. The ESP expires at 125K or in 2034, whichever comes first.

EX2: You buy a new truck in 2026, but wait until 2029, 28K miles (before OEM) to get the ESP. The ESP still expires at 125K or 2034.

EX3: You buy a new truck in 2026. In 2030, 37K miles (after OEM) you buy an 5yr/60K ESP. This is 'used car' ESP that expires 2035 or 97K miles. Chances are, you will need a vehicle inspection if you are buying 'used car' ESP.

You really need to buy it before the original warranty expires. Yes, if you buy a six year plan it only covers an additional three years beyond the first three years. The plan coverage is the total years from new purchase.
