My method has always been don't buy it until the original warranty is about to expire. Decide at that point if I'm going to trade in or not. If not, buy the warranty on-line then. If you're getting a car loan it makes no sense to get it from the dealer at a higher cost at purchase and pay interest on it for three years before it's needed. If I've bought it at the 3 year point I will get a rebate if I trade the vehicle in before the extended warranty ends anyway. I always get the Ford plan. The others can use non Ford parts and can argue with the repair shop over cost. Not a good idea to have the repair place ticked off that they aren't getting what they asked before they even start repairing your car.
