i would rather protect the sheet metal first and consider the looks second.

if someone doesn't like the look of the hood deflector, they can race you and if they win, they can complain about it

The reality is hood deflectors might help with stone chips and fine gravel right on the edge, but rocks they're only going to bounce. Something big enough to leave that type of gash is going to do damage to something.

I would clean the chip and use matching touch-up paint if it has gone through the paint, mainly to keep moisture from getting in. If one of the rocks also hit the windshield, that is worth checking before a small chip spreads, and a local shop like charlotte auto glass could handle that if needed. How big is the chip?
