Years ago, I lost the remotes to my Genie garage door opener. I never worried about it... until I realized my Ranger has HomeLink on the visor. Everything I'm seeing about programming it requires the remote. I assume that'st the only way to program it, but I figured I'd throw a hail mary and ask. Has anyone programmed a HomeLink without the garage remote?

I went and bought a cheap universal remote at Lowes. I programmed that to the opener and then used it to program the Homelink. I think it cost under $20.

The cheap universal option is great or get a used opener. If you have a friend or relative with a compatible remote, you could use that to program by programming it to your opener. The only drawback is that whoever has that opener could open your door in the future.

I think this is my option. Better than a new door opener.

They don't work that way. Your friend's remote won't operate your opener. If you used it to program your homelink, your truck would open his garage, not yours.

Depending on the brand and age of your opener, you should be able to program your homelink to it. It's the same way an aftermarket remote would program to it if you had no remote. (All the homelink is is a universal remote)
Here's an example:

They do work that way if you pair them to the power head, but you would have to use the correct remote, pair it, then program the home link. Agreed that buying a replacement remote is the best solution, then use that to program the home link.

Actually, this worked. I hadn't bought a remote yet but was reading about how it works and rolling codes. Seems it would have been a waste of money anyway because I've read that the rolling code remotes won't work. Mine is working... thanks to all who answered! :like:
