I am 71 years old and I have never owned a truck that did this, I know that the KO3s toss rocks like crazy, but I have extra large mud flaps and I never expected this. I just got back from Moab, I did NOT wash the wheel and tire, but I did wash the underside of the truck.

I really don't want to carry it inside the bed, but that amount of debris seems ridiculous IMHO. It would be very messy for a roadside flat tire change.... I don't see anything on the rear structure that might be sending rocks up there. There is a heavy duty aftermarket ABS cover that protects the bottom, that might do the trick. Maybe the stones are bouncing up THROUGH the wheel holes?

Thanks for any comments. I am scratching my head over this.

EDIT: I did drive through a lot of really deep soft sand, so deep that the spare tire probably dragged along the center of the track in a few spots. Maybe that was it? That was the first time for me in those conditions.... I usually stick to ranch roads.

John-

Thanks for sharing!

I see you have added an extension to your valve stem to be able to check pressure in spare without dropping it. If you install the spare protector, please share your approach for routing extension hose. Probably not that complicated, but I appreciate learning from your experience…

With that plastic protector installed, the hose would just go out towards the rear, over the top of the tire. But it would need to secured with nylon ties, that would involve extra work, lying on your back, when raising and lowering the assembly. Of course you will still have to lower it every now and then to remove the darn gravel….

John, I just got my RR this week so I've not encountered this but in addition to the spare protector for the bottom is there room for some form of protector on top that makes it a tire sandwich? I would think that as long as there are a few holes drilled in the bottom cover for water to drain it should work.
