Today I practiced changing a tire and I maybe super dumb since I read this but guess I didn’t understand it and went through the same cycle, only I opened the manual.

https://www.ranger6g.com/forum/threads/well-i-feel-dumb.18395/

to reiterate, open square goes into the white funnel thingy above the spare tire at an angle.

and the scissor jack is adequate for lifting front and back wheels. Although I’m going to carry a chunk of wood for a pad

I took some pictures for posterity

Edit added picture showing which end to use of the jack handle

I tested mine past weekend!! I used silver sharpie and wrote "spare tire" on the open square end. Or could use piece of tape, etc. And i wrote "jack" on the end of the rod with T-end. Nice and bright. That way me or other person can easy read what goes where and how to assemble.

FYI when propping up the hood. There is indented arrow on underside of hood showing where the guide rod should go. I backfill the arrow with a bright color paint pen. Easy glance to know where hood prop goes!

Was always fun to stick the new guys on Ford spare duty when I worked at a tire shop. Fortunately we had full-length rods.

changing a spare tire is an exercise we should all do while in a safe, low pressure environment, like at home, just to get used to doing it. If something is confusing or not straight forward it’s so much harder to figure out roadside with trucks blasting by in the rain just inches from where you’re cursing your luck.

My old F150 must have needed to go out the assembly line cuz the spare was same rim + tire as the other 4. Full aluminum rim! So I got good at 5 tire rotation and lowering that thing every 5k miles.

Have not tried Ranger yet.

Since I just had to change a flat I found that a 7/16 inch socket will work to lower tire. This with a long ~27" extension may come in handy.

I'm surprised there isn't a button on the fob for lowering the spare.....

Good on ya guys for figuring it out at home to be prepared. Sitting on the side of the freeway in the rain at night desperately trying to find a how-to youtube video....... LOL

That would be so funny to have a button on the fob

There should be no funnel.
A bar should extend to the bumper with a 1/2 or 3/8 end.
This way no fumbling trying to get that rod into the funnel.

Tried mine today. Had a heck of a time, the funnel tube was badly misalined.
Glad I found it now!

Okay, just to piggyback off of this. I pulled the stock scissor jack to help with installing some skid plates in work garage and no idea how it fits back in to its spot behind the seat with that other piece that locks it in place. I finally got it in but I'd be shocked if it's in properly.
