I live in Southern Ca, and have a cabin in Big Bear, where we do get snow. By law, we have to carry chains anytime there is a possibility of snow, and may be stopped and asked to show them at anytime, including regular road check points. In 16 years of having this cabin, I have never had to put on chains on any of our AWD, or 4WD vehicles, but have had to show them several times, and had I not had them, would have been turned back. The manual for my XLT 4WD, says to use "S class chains", also warns of possible damage to aluminum wheels. Wondering if anyone has had an opportunity to use chains, or cables, and what did you think. Honestly, if there is 2 plus feet of snow on the road, I would just hang out at the cabin until the snow plow comes by.

Are tire socks allowed as replacement for chains? I've read good reviews on those.

Guess not many have experience with chains on our trucks. Looked up what "S" class means, and it chains for tight clearance. This is what the manual calls for. Im surprised, because I looked at my truck, and there seems to be at least 2" of clearance all around, possibly more room. I tried looking for "S" class tire chains on Amazon, and they dont differentiate, so dont feel comfortable buying there. I called etrailer, as I have bought many things for our motorhome from them, and like and trust them. They only carry one chain that would fit the truck, and it is "S" class, and its a cable set up. This will work fine for my needs, but its certainly not an ideal in terms of best traction.

Please no. I also have a place in Big Bear and I haven't had a single year where I haven't gotten stuck behind someone with the socks on.
I've always used the cables (except once I used chains, which ended up breaking and damaging the truck) I've never had any traction issues with them.

We got snowed in at big bear one time. We were up to play in the snow on the inner tubes amd it snowed like crazy. My parents had to get a hotel room amd we were stuck for 3 days. And then 5 mph down the mountain because everyone was stuck and no chains.

This was probably 88 or 89

S Class chains are made of mithril and enchanted with the blessing of eternal traction.

You can get them for free in the boss room on level 99 of the final dungeon.

It’s that time of year again so I figured I’d bump this thread to see what everyone is using for chains. Here’s my setup on stock wheels/tires. I chose an aggressive set of chains for a couple reasons:
One - where I live snow often has a layer of ice underneath.
Second - I only need to travel (slowly) about a mile on relatively level unmaintained roads to reach a paved road well maintained by the county.
I realize these chains could damage the wheels, but I wont go over about 10mph with them, plus I’d rather damage a wheel than slide off the road.
