I used to have one called CarlinKit and worked fine with my previous car. the same box did not work properly in the ranger.. screen resolution. My current solution is: I wired connected an android phone with a sim card and hide it in the glove box, I hide the wire as well so, it is totally invisible. Everyting I turn on the truck, it automatically connects to android auto and it has internet via the sim installed on the phone. It works perfectly for me, I have maps and spotify.. I cant watch videos due to an android auto limitation, I know I can "root" or hack the phone and install other apps and watch videos, but it is not needed for me (for now)

From the photos it looks like these devices do not use whole 100% of the Sync screen, is this true? Does it bother you while watching movies?

it does not use the whole screen, it uses the same section as the back up camera. it doesn't bother my wife, who watches the videos while i drive.

Yes, it is true and yes it bothers a little bit because of the screen size itself, not because it doesn't fill the whole screen. Our car has a vertical screen and all movies are 16:9 (or at least 4:3), witch means a horizontal screen.

I have seen some people on this forum affirming they would like to hide the AC controls from the lower part of the screen but I really can't see the point.

Just for example, this is how a horizontal movie would play on our screen:

Do people really think that making it vertically fullscreen would give a better experience?

For me it looks terrible. The image would get all distorted and out of proportion.

Anyway, that's my point of view. I never used it to really watch movies, I use it to "watch" youtube videos or podcasts. For movies I prefer a way bigger screen and a moment when I can really concentrate on watching it. :like:
