Anyone have any solutions for a flat textured tailgate work surface? Mainly for scuba diving gear setup. The ridges in the tailgate don't help for sitting a flat booted tank upright. I would be bungying the top of the tank to avoid tipping.

I've seen the Billiebars tailgate mod, but I don't want to remove anything. I want to keep the original surface. and temp place a surface, maybe buckle down somehow.

I would just carry a sheet of plywood the size of the tailgate.

Has anyone considered a piece of Starboard the size of the tailgate? Unlike plywood it is unaffected by moisture or sun exposure and comes in various thinknesses.

Billy bars is not a permanent modification. It is a pretty sweet product. I would highly suggest it.

I have the Bedrug Impact bed mat (note: it is NOT the carpet like material that other Bedrug products are made of). It’s textured, slightly padded, and covers the tailgate. It’s held on by Velcro. You could conceivably purchase it, and then cut just the tailgate piece off. Apply the Velcro and then you can take it on and off as much as you want but the Velcro strips would just stay stuck on the tailgate still.

I have used Starboard on boats for years. It is UV stable, unaffected by moisture and easily machinable. MHO, it would make a great tailgate surface.

How do you like the textured mat? I’ve had a carpet bed rug in the past it was nice! Is the textured pad cushioned enough for being on a knee?

I really like it. In my previous truck I had the Ford OEM bed mat, but I like this one much better over that. You can kneel on it and it’s cushioned; not a ton of cushioning but enough to shield your knees and not have to deal with the “ribs” on the floor as it provides cushioning such that it makes it level. Makes it a lot comfier to sit and lay on as well. I can set something down on it without it moving during the drive unless I have to brake really hard, but yet you’re still able to slide items in if need be. I’m very happy with my decision and would recommend it.
