Hi everyone,

This is Leonel from Argentina.
I own a Ford Ranger Raptor 3.0 V6 EcoBoost (397HP), and I’ve noticed an unusual noise when the engine is idling. The noise is more noticeable when idle, when the engine is cold and warm, and it sounds like a broken walkie-talkie, static interference or some leak, occurring at irregular intervals (it doesn’t sync with the RPM). It’s hard to determine if it persists when accelerating, as the normal engine and turbo sounds seem to mask it.

So far, the vehicle runs perfectly, with no warning lights, power loss, or noticeable performance issues. I’m wondering if this is a normal sound for this engine, perhaps related to the turbo system (bypass valves or wastegate), or if it could indicate something like a small air leak or a component that needs adjustment.
It is my first time with this vehicle/engine.

Has anyone experienced something similar on this engine? Any insights or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

I have had the same sounds (static ham radio sound) since new. Now two years and 60k mile later, the truck still runs like a dream.

Where the exhaust exits the cat’s and merge together is a y pipe.
This y-pipe is wrapped in heat shield.
It also happens to be directly below where condensates runs off of the A/C system.

When I heard this sound on my truck I confirmed it’s just condensate water dripping from the A/C onto the hot y-pipe.

Poor engineer on Ford’s part yet again…

After further investigation, the issue seems related to a PCV valve. Specifically, the one that has a brown color inside the hose. I confirmed this when I removed the hose, as the noise immediately stopped. Clearly, some defective units have come from the factory.

Ford replaced the PCV valve. The issue disappeared for a few days, but now it is doing it again...
