Horrible noise on cold start up of Ranger Raptor?

Has anyone come across their new gen Ranger Raptor making a terrible noise on first start up of the day?

It almost sounds like my old diesel without enough oil in it.

It is going into ford next week for a diagnosis, but it would be good to know if this has happened elsewhere and what the outcome was.

There is a few units in Australia that have had a problem with valve springs which that sounds to me.
Dealers are fully aware and have been sent the memo via ford.
Make sure they send the oil away for analysis when they have rectified the valves as they have authorized dealers to change the engine if further damage has been caused by a result of the bad valve springs.

If the valve springs were bad, it seems it would continue to be noisy. It sounds more like cam phasers that are leaky and as pressure comes up they quit rattling.

Sounds like the cam phasers. Sounds similar to the issues that the 3.5EB had from the 2018-19 Model years.

Yep, they had to be replaced on wife expeditions 3.5L under warranty. Ford made dealer try 2 different software updates first before they ultimately had to replace phasers. Didn’t make the noise on warm startup

Don’t look like the easiest of jobs to do either on some models!

The noise only happens for less than 2 seconds.

Correct, pretty involved process. I think the recall/tsb paperwork ford sent us showed like a 3 day job. Well it turned into 6 weeks total due to parts availability. Thankfully got a great dealer, they gave us and brand new f150 with 4 miles on it as a loaner the entire time.

correct it goes away once engine warms up.

Sounds like lifters to me. They are supposed to pump up, and hold that pressure from the day the engine is new. But as they wear out, random lifters will *knock* until oil pressure brings them up tight against the push-rods/valves. The fact that it goes away so quickly is more evidence for lifters.

A few specks of dirt during assembly could cause it, or just defective lifter seals.

My buddy used to take a stethoscope and put it on the valve covers to identify the source of the noise. I always just put my fingertips on the valve cover, and you could feel the clatter.

I ran across this while searching ford cam phaser. May or may not apply with your model year but sounds like same issue. Check with your dealer
