I’m sitting here hmmming and hawing over my future cover / rack / RTT combo. Currently leaning Diamondback HD with 2 front runner racks that allow the cover to open when nothing big is mounted (found a pic from someone who did this). It’s pretty streamlined for the 90% of other time I’m driving around. But might forego the racks and just use the front runner support bars instead. I’m also intrigued by the iKamper Raconteur racks, but not available for Rangers yet. I’m having an hard time being patient for products to catch up to our new model. Anyway, show me your setup!

Me too.
God I hope we don't turn into the Taco crowd where you bolt on every expensive never used accessory that was spotted at Overland Expo.
well some of us truly like to overland. I do dispersed camping with my kids and hunt in the fall for pheasant and grouse, so I’m always looking for versatile set ups that look normal for every day driving. I’ll probably keep all my “bolt ons” secure/hidden in the covered bed ;)

Xtrusion overland offers a great setup. The Leitner kit for 19-23 Rangers works in conjunction with the Retrax but then you are locked in to all of their proprietary stuff. I am eying the RSI Smartcap Adventure over the sport. I like having everything inside. The molle panels are great and paired with something like bedslide would be great. We start to run into payload issues though. Love seeing what everyone does.

I'm on the fence between the decked system and diamond back cover you have. Seems like the two best options to me. The problem is I don't really know what I need yet. I'm based out of Nevada so obviously need to be able to carry a lot of water.

I have the decked system so far. Looking forward to getting the Xtrusion Overland XO. Skeleton whenever it comes out. Looking at the mid height rack.
Thats my problem, I can't get most of the stuff I want yet.

We use a trailer, so I’m no help

Nice trailer! What brand and model are you towing? I’ve been looking at a Hiker trailer since there is no 6’ bed Rangers available.

I’ve been in Montana and Wyoming for almost the last two weeks and I’ve never seen so many longbed mid-sized trucks set up as camping rigs… and yes, almost all are Tacomas.

Hike Trailer Mid-Range 5x9. I bought it before they introduced the XL and it has some features of that current model. Pretty happy with it, although we are considering a larger trailer.

Same here, although I rarely use the term “overland”. I camp in pretty remote areas in the mountains and desert. Judging by the “rigs” I see, there are a lot of people who bolt all kinds of expensive stuff to their vehicle and either never use it off road or meticulously clean it all after every trip. They look good in the office parking lot though.

I probably wouldn’t use the term if I were in the desert or mountains either. I’m far from both of those things. Living in Minnesota our traveling is literally over the fields, trails, and lakes of Minnesota and the Dakotas. Lots of corn, mud, and ice. Winter camping in northern MN…not for the sensitive.
I remove almost everything but the rack from my truck when I’m not camping or hunting. Maybe a small off road trailer would be helpful if they handle well at faster speeds through the fields. We have large distances to cover.

LOL, the bottomless economic pit that is Overlanding. The term FARKLE has not yet caught on with this crowd, but it does apply perfectly.

Fancy Accessory Really Kool Likely Expensive

https://abilitymagazine.com/what-the-farkle/.

I have been down that hole once before with a fully farkled Series 80, once you start, it is very hard to not keep adding stuff to a perfectly adequate vehicle, it just ends up destroying the available payload for stuff like passengers and you personal gear… . Especially when you try to make it good at something it was never designed to do, like rock crawling with a RR.

A stock Taco might have a max payload of less than 1000 pounds. Adding heavy suspension does not change that figure at all. Please, just get a trailer…

Haha, maybe I should have worded the title differently to focus on just camping and hunting ;)
I didn't know the term "overlanding" would cause such a stir. For me its just a generic term for traveling off the road and through the many fields, not necessarily for the specifics of rock crawling, fjording, etc. My original post is quite a bit more modest... a set up for a tent, gear, skis, dog kennels, etc. Surely there are some others out there who are more "outdoorsmen" than "off-roaders" and need their truck to be outfitted appropriately. Hopefully I can see some of the pros and cons of those set-ups as people start building. Cheers!
