So my check engine light came on after a job the other day. It’s an emission system leak. That morning I decided to get gas for my lawn mowers and had about a gallon in the can. Took my filler funnel and put it in my truck so I could fill an empty can and the station. In my stupidity I left the funnel in the filler tube, which is most definitely what threw the code. I’ve driven about 70+ miles so far and the check engine light is still on. Now the question… will it reset itself like it’s supposed to (ya know like an older car) or do I have to take it to a dealer?

Probably a dumb question but have you completely filled up the tank since?

I have filled the tank since then, purposely ran it down to like 65 miles to empty and filled it completely from there. We shall see like I said I haven’t put many miles on since so not many key cycles. Also, all fittings and connections on the filler tube are intact and there’s no damage and it doesn’t look like anything was under undue stress other than the flapper being held open

Get a scanner or go to your local auto parts and have them reset the CEL
Never fill your truck with the motor running or have that funnel stuck in the fill port

It could be that it takes multiple full cycles free of errors before it resets. I have heard of some manufacturers requiring 10 or more full cycles before resetting the check engine light. Not sure what Ford requires to validate emissions system is good to clear code. Maybe there is a Ford tech in the forum that can speak to clearing the check engine code.
