This question comes up all the time, and the answers are often misleading. Usually it’s just a photo at ride height with someone saying “fits no problem.” We’ve just had a Next Gen Raptor in the workshop running 315/70R17 BFGoodrich Mud Terrains on the factory wheels, and here’s what we actually found.

At ride height, sure — they look fine. But once you cycle the suspension properly:
  • Rubbing on the rear shock towers
  • Rubbing on the front upper control arm and ball joint boot
  • And worth noting: BFGoodrich 315s are undersized compared to most brands. A “true” 315 is even larger and makes the clearance worse.

The bigger point isn’t just width clearance — it’s clearance at full compression. Off-road, when the suspension articulates and the sidewall flexes, the tyre moves closer to the chassis and components. That’s when the rubbing gets serious.

To run 315s correctly you’ll need two things:
  1. Wider offset wheels to move the tyre away from the chassis and control arms.
  2. A lift (strut spacers) equal to or greater than the increase in tyre radius, to preserve compression travel.

We’ve broken this down in detail in our Ultimate Guide to Lifting Your Ranger Raptor here: goatoffroad.com.au/rangerraptorlifts

Hopefully that clears up some of the confusion for anyone considering the swap.

Would you say that if I go with 17x9 wheels with a +30 offset, paired with Goodyear Territory MTs in 315/70R17, and add a 1" strut spacer lift front and rear, the setup would be plug-and-play without any modifications?

I’m aiming for something that rides similar to OEM. I also plan to recalibrate the height sensors using Forscan Lite once everything is installed. Do you think this setup would achieve that balance?

Yes that wheel setup will fix the problem this thread is about.

BUT 1" spacer in the front is not enough to provide safe clearance to the guards at full compression. You need a spacer thickness that is greater than the tyre radius increase. I have written an extensive article that explains this further here www.goatoffroad.com.au/rangerraptorlifts.

Thanks for the clarification. Much appreciated!

This has been fantastic information and so educational. One QQ - I am thinking about putting the 315/70/17 on the Stock rimes (2025 Model). Using your 2”front and 1” rear. Would I be able to use a 10mm Wheel spacer with the stock Wheels to sufficiently make this scenario work? Thank you in advance. A second option is going with a 35/11.5/17.

15mm would be ideal. Just make sure you get hubcentric 93.1mm spacers. That would be the same as fitting a +40 offset wheel, which is our reccomendation. But, not alot of options for that in the US.
