I trimmed mine. Even with a rubber mallet there was no way it was going to fit.

When we designed it on our truck, it popped in by hand. The variability of powder coat could cause a buildup on the edges of the cutout a little, but there could also just be some variance in the plastic hitch plugs. We have done a few at the shop and they have all pushed in by hand, albeit tight. I like that fit to be tight since that's what is holding everything together.
