I love Engineer Pass. Kinda surprised it is clear of enough snow to be open.

They plow Engineer and Cinnamon Passes every year and try to get them open by Memorial Day. It helps kick start the tourist season and bring money into the local towns. Other alpine passes in the area are left to melt naturally.

Awesome! We're headed to that part of CO in a couple weeks. I'd like to do Engineer Pass (being an engineer, and all), but this is my first truck and first vehicle capable of anything offroad. Not sure something like that is a good intro. I'd feel more confident if I had some more experience. We'll do the Million Dollar Highway, but doubt we'll get in many trails.

If you want to get off pavement give the east side (Silverton side) of Ophir Pass a go. It's a tame dirt road that takes you up high and there is a short hike from the pass that takes you to a scenic alpine lake. The west side of the pass will still be closed due to snow, so you'll have to drive back down vs. going over to Ophir/Telluride.

You should also drive up to the ghost town of Animas Forks from Silverton, another good introduction and easy drive.

Are you talking about Red Mountain Pass?

That's a great time to be there. The parade in Ouray is great. Hopefully they'll do the flyover this year. That's the best part! We'll be there then as well, hopefully.
