Here’s a pretty interesting discussion of the difference between load range tires and what really goes into them:

Spot on, thats what I tried to explain a few posts back. Tire construction matters more than rating, im sure there are C rated tires that ride worse than some E rated.

Im pretty sold on trying Pirelli XTMs once my KO3s are worn out based on the reviews. The E load rating doesnt deter me. It may be that Pirelli was able to engineer a sidewall that achieves higher load rating without being overly stiff.

Stiffness of the sidewall isnt what makes for a load rating, its how much air pressure can it handle without damage. So you can have materials that remain fairly pliable but also have a high load capability without failure.

I like that the XTMs have the same tread width as the AT4Ws, even more aggressive sidewall than either the AT4W or the KO3, similar offroad traction but steering precisoon thats close to a road focused AT tire. Its like the "summer performance tire" of off road.

The added tread width will give it a bigger look without burdening the powertrain and in fact its 12lbs less rotating mass yet over the factory KO3.

I see it as the tire to get for my general purpose Road / Rally build. Set of angled rock sliders and an IC upgrade, im set. Balance is the key. But I personally think its wasteful to just trash my KO3s with only 24k miles when theres plenty of tread on them still so ill use them to at least 40k to get most of the life out of them.
