I need some advice on my break-in plan. About 3 weeks after I receive my 2.7 V6 Lariat I'm planning a 1,500 mile round trip road trip from Houston to Kansas. The route is primarily interstate, 75-85 mph, no towing and not a lot of elevation change. At the point I will start the trip I might have 100-200 miles of a 70/30 blend of local trip and local highway driving. Is that enough mileage to take on the interstate road trip? Should I consider adding some "back road detours" along the way to get some more gear changes in? Or should I wait until I have more break-in miles before taking on the road trip? Also, after I return from this trip I won't be driving for a few weeks (surgery). Thanks in advance.

Forgot to add this: I plan on having the oil changed in Kansas after I arrive.

You'll more than likely be fine no matter what you do so don't stress about it or overthink it.

With that said, I very much prefer to vary rpm's while breaking in a new engine, with both load and higher rpm's coming as the miles add up. I also personally think heat cycles are important too, meaning maybe I'll drive a gentle 100 miles, let it cool thoroughly, and the next trip will see a bit higher rpms and/or load, let it cool thoroughly, lather, rinse, repeat until I think the run-in is done, then I change fluids and filters and drive/ride it like I stole it

That's pretty much what I did for the first 1,000 km. It's had a few WFO runs since then.

I drive 40 miles round trip to work, city and interstate mixed. I changed my oil at 2000 mi. Wanted to change at 1000 but didn't get to it. I think you be good with your plan.
