This is exactly how I read it. There are a lot of people freaking out about these that probably don't actually need them. Sure they're good insurance but far from mandatory.if you're offroading without a shell -> you don't need j braces
if you have a shell but the truck is a pavement princess -> you don't need j braces
if your friends want to sit on your truck bedrails while the truck is stationary -> you don't need j braces
if you want to offroad with a camper shell/heavy bedrack or your friends want to sit on your truck bedrails while you offroad -> you should get j braces
The whole J brace fiasco seems like Ford being aware that a small about of users are going to load up bed racks with rooftop tents and gear, running close to Max payload and over rough trails. This gives them the opportunity to strengthen the bed for the power users and save money for the guys buying pavement princess trucks.
