Mid size EV truck in 2027?

I’m guessing mid-sized means it’s on the Ranger platform, but this is the first I’m hearing of an ev Ranger. Has anyone heard of other news or rumors about this mid-sized ev truck from ford that’s supposed to be here in 2027?

It’s allegedly going to be built on Ford’s “universal EV platform” which allows them to build a cars, SUV, “trucks” - I think it’s pretty unlikely it will be a BOF vehicle given the trends with other EVs.

Huh, that’ll be interesting to see if it’s a unibody but I suppose that makes sense. I assumed or guessed it’d be on the Ranger or maverick platforms but a lot of engineering to go into that decision. It’s curious to me that they just discontinued the lightning and now announce this.

So if I understand correctly the lightning isn’t dead, dead. It’s being converted into an EREV. This allows Ford to preserve all the tooling and infrastructure it built for the Lightning so it won’t have to start from scratch when it revives a full-sized electric pickup.

The EV transition forced Ford’s hand. Battery technology wasn’t mature enough for practical vehicle that could do truck stuff, but they couldn’t wait to develop it lest they cede market share to other companies.

Just as surprised that it was a mid-sized vehicle. I thought for sure they’d go with an electric Maverick precisely because of the issues they had with the Lightning.

My dad has a Lightning. It’s an awesome vehicle, Ford really went all out on it with the technology and comfort. But if you want to tow or carry something heavy, you’re going to be topping up at EVERY charging station along your route.

I don't think it's clear what the electric midsize truck will be. I don't think it is a ranger. I think it would be more like a maverick

Ford is quoted as saying the new vehicles will be all new nameplates

There is also a new ICE built ford tough truck coming in 2029

I think what is happening is that Ford had a look at Tesla and what the Chinese are doing and there cost of making a vehicle is lower because they do things like large castings.

And I think that is what is going to happen with these future vehicles. And I believe Ford will apply that concept to all of their inexpensive vehicles regardless of engine type.

I don't know how much of the tooling for the f150 Lightning will be key but the EREV is essentially and electric vehicle with addition of a gas generator.

probably makes sense for large vehicles that tow things but is a more complex vehicle

Have mentioned it on the forum before that I would have bought a Ranger hybrid if one was available. Not interested in a full EV at this time though, just doesn't fit my use case.

That said, I am looking forward to seeing what Ford develops with this multi-use platform. Would like to see it be a game-changer in some ways but I'm not holding my breath.

With the unicastings and the new assembly line process Ford says they will be able to reduce the number of parts and cost to build these new vehicles.

Yeah, I would have done the hybrid as well. Would have at least liked a factory option with more power for the rear bed outlet though - at least I can charge the batteries for my tools.

Hopefully this “Ford Skunkworks” team bears fruit.

Hybrid for me too. I love the wife's etorq wrangler. 27mpg in a wrangler is badass when just cruising and 25 in town is equally impressive
