I visited Joshua Tree for the first time over the weekend, more specifically we took a trip down Old Dale Road. It was exactly as I expected it to be....deserty with a hint of rocks.
You can run through the trail really fast but if you want to hop off and take a look at the "mines" then it will take you some time. The reason I say "mines" is because most of them are just a shallow hole in the ground because they have been filled I am assuming. Majority of the trail is sandy with some dips here and there but when you get to the mountains that is where us stock height guys had to stop and choose our lines. Yes, one of my buddies took his stock 4x4 Silverado and did not have any issues. It just took a little bit of guiding from us to get him through.
It was about 9pm when we reached the BLM and National Park line so we decided to call it a night and camped out there. This worked in our favor because when we woke up the next day we noticed that we had passed the iconic building with the American flag painted on it.
I would recommend trying out this trail if you have time to stop and enjoy some history. There are plenty of caves and abandoned structures to explore with family and friends or just solo.
