Pre-Collision Avoidance Issue

I just made a 5000+ mile trip from Louisiana to British Columbia and back in 7 days. I kept having issues where the truck would slam on the breaks just as I was overtaking a Semi while on the interstate. It did not happen for every Semi, but was happening enough that it was aggravating. I finally noticed that every time it happened, the Semi was equipped with proximity sensors on the side. It appears to me that the sensors they are using are interfering with the pre-collision sensors on the Ranger making it think it is about to collide with something. Has anyone else experienced this?

Having worked in the IoT industry for a few years on the telematics/safety side of things for large fleets, expect to see this more in the future.

similar to how Hondas used to always trigger K Band alerts on radar detectors, class 8 OEMs producing trucks are using sensors within a specific frequency that trigger other sensors. I assume it’s a simple update from either fords side or the class 8 truck side, but it won’t be going away.

Interesting, How does one ID a proximity sensor? Can you change the pre-collision sensitivity to see if that helps?

They are black boxes mounted on the sides of a semi near the driver's door. They work just like the round sensors in the bumper of the ranger.

I also noticed it happened more in the states with higher speed limits so the ranger may be increasing the sensitivity as the vehicle speed increases. It is very unnerving to be cruising along at 80 mph and the brakes slam on.

Do we know if the brake lights come on when the Ranger slows down suddenly like this?

I know you said it might have something to do with the truck's proximity sensors but did you happen to notice if the trucks had angled side markers halfway up the side of the trailer? We have an Infiniti that will try to slow down when we pass a rig with those angled side markers, day or night.

It would do it just as the front bumper came even with the driver door of the semi.

Back around 1990 when we started putting ABS in motor homes, passing any radio tower, military installation, and many power grid substations would trigger the ABS light.

Not surprised in the least! I know the manufacturers of a few units have asked other manufacturers to avoid specific frequencies but typically they don’t.
