The photos are fantastic....makes me want to take a similar trip. Hope you're out there having a blast. Arguably the most beautiful operating steam engine in America is housed in your home state. In Portland, OR to be exact.

I love looong road trips in my RR, but I am holding off this year because of #$%^&* gas prices. I will stick to short local trips for a while.

Good luck, your truck is a killer road tripper.

What are you doing for nav? I strongly recommend a stand alone gps. You will be in cell phone deserts very often.... you can't go wrong with a Garmin DriveSmart 76. $250 at Amazon.... plus onX Offroad on your phone. My iPhone streams it very well and it is drop dead gorgeous on that big center screen. It also works on Android Auto.

John, I'm considering this.
Which onX? We don't do much hiking any more although I still mountain bike a lot.
So my main interest would be backroads and 4 wheeling trails, not so much hiking trails.
Looks like Backcountry (vs Offroad) would be the choice, but their descriptions and photos don't differentiate the 2 very well.

When we started planning we were going to take the Escape (30-32 mpg) but after we bought the RR we changed our mind. The difference in mileage at current gas prices adds about $600 to the whole trip. Since the total cost will probably exceed $15k, it's a drop in the bucket. But one thing that really irritates me is the small gas tank!....

You want the Offroad version, my hiker wife has tried the Backcountry version and was not impressed. Give it a try for free (first year, auto renews).

I love the hybrid satellite topo mode, it is very cool. It is also HIGHLY readable when driving, unlike the GAIA maps.

You definitely have to download all your maps by wifi before driving, they are very big files. Sorry for the thread hijack.
