Side mirrors melted

Oh boy. I don’t even know where to start. I was driving my truck around today making the usual stops, and when I was getting back in my truck after a car wash, I noticed my driver side mirror was MESSED up to put it nicely. I couldn’t believe it. I inspected the rest of the entire truck and it was all fine until I got around to the passenger side and realized that mirror was also screwed up. They both are now melted. I am beyond flabbergasted and upset about it and I have zero idea how this could have occurred. I don’t park anywhere that there is a crazy reflection, the truck mirrors were fine this morning, and I didn’t go anywhere or do anything crazy, just shopped some and got gas. The only thing I can think of is this was the first chilly day of the year here in NC, and maybe some wiring went bad from defrosting? I’m not sure. Anyone seen anything like this before?

What I find odd is the melted area on the drivers side A pillar attach point. I would not think any wiring would be riding up that high.

I would not rule out a electrical short, but it almost looks like vandalism with a heat source.

I would also add that both mirrors get heater power through each respective side door module with each door module on a separate fused circuit.

That’s a solid point. It is higher than where a wire would be. Maybe the car wash did it. But no freaking clue what would be that hot in a car wash. And of course the carwash denied any wrong doing.

That took a LOT of heat to melt, and over a decent amount of time too. Like, my heat gun puts out 600F and it would take more than a few seconds of concentrated heat to cause that kind of damage to a car's plastic. If that's not electrical, someone really hates you or your truck.

Yeah, I am thinking that is heat damage originating externally and not internally. Could either pop off the mirror cap or detach from the A pillar side to get a look on the inside to make certain.

I don’t believe it is vandalism because I wasn’t away from my truck for any period of time today where someone could have accomplished that and the fact that it’s on both mirrors and nowhere else on the truck. It really is perplexing and driving me mad.

What kind of car wash did you go through? High pressure water streams concentrated can generate some heat, especially if the water is heated also.

Edit: I also find the paint on the door frame by the A pillar mount being undamaged also perplexing.

I goggled car wash and melted mirrors and it seems to not be out of the ordinary for something like this to happen. I bet that car wash has stored video for their benefit but getting that for yours may be a challenge.

Really weird, something caused that melt pattern to go from low to high in a direct line on the driver’s side. Unless it is the reflection, is there also a “dimple” on the top of the passenger mirror?

Yeah the passenger mirror is warped like it was heated.
