I was washing the truck and noticed two small scrapes in the paint on the lower edge of the tailgate. A bit of inspection revealed that when the tailgate is lowered, the bottom edge hits against the screws holding the license plate to the [plastic] fascia underneath the plate. (?!)
I got some of that rubber U-channel trim and put it across the bottom edge of the tailgate. Problem solved. But it seems like the license plate and the plastic it mounts to should have been set back a little further to keep the tailgate from hitting it. Or, better yet, the plastic part should have been metal. Am I wrong?

The license plate just screws directly into the plastic of the rear bumper, there's no specific mounting holes. I'm guessing your dealership installed the license plate too high. On my truck the screws don't touch the tailgate.

I checked and on mine, there is a specific spot. You can see from behind.

I didn’t feel like taking the front off to see if I have all of those holes but I don’t recall seeing them.

but from behind you can see there is one reinforced spot for the plate screws.

maybe the upgrade for the 25 year?

and I checked and if the screw holding the license plate frame sticks out too far, the tailgate could hit it.

as it is i have a finger width of clearance.

i think normally dealers give you cheap plastic frames.
