I have a 2025 Ranger XL. I also have a ton of music on a thumb drive (over 500GB), I get a message that the ports are charging only. I tried some suggestions from Chat GTP and I got it to recognize an old USB2.0 thumb drive, but no dice on the new 1TB SSK drive. I was hoping to have just one drive for the music rather than 4 or 5 smaller drives. Has anyone encountered this or has found a fix?
Thanks in advance.

Most likely it is the USB Thumb Drive formatting - wrong format, and it will not be recognized.
If memory serves me right, it needs to be formatted 'Fat32' ; but someone else here might know more about it than I can remember.
Good luck with it.

No direct experience, this might help. Tho I suspect that your drive is too large.

It’s originally formatted as xfat, and I tried to format it to Fat32 but it didn’t give me that option. So it must be the drive itself.

Thanks! that clears some things up. Waiting for (4) 512GB drives in the mail.
Appreciate the help!

Yes, Windows 10/11 no longer has the option to format to 'FAT32'.
Here's a free Utility that I use to format my USB Thumb Drives to 'FAT32' :
https://fat32format-gui.en.lo4d.com/windows

This is not an installer, it's just a small Utility Program that you can download & use for free.
Just be certain that you select your USB Thumb Drive before to click on 'Format', so that you don't accidently Format the wrong Drive.
And, let us know if this fixes your issue.

For what it may be worth, a Google search turned up this info...

While
Ford does not specify a maximum gigabyte capacity for the 2025 Ranger's SYNC 4 system in the owner's manual, user reports indicate that large USB drives, including those up to 256GB and even larger external SSDs (up to 2TB), work successfully for music playback.

The key requirements are generally related to the drive's format and the number of files:

  • File System: The drive should ideally be formatted in exFAT or NTFS for larger capacities. Older SYNC systems usually require FAT32, which has a 32GB practical limit for standard formatting tools.
  • File/Track Limit: There is a known system limit of approximately 50,000 files or 15,000 "grammar objects" (voice commands per track/artist/album) that SYNC can index per device for proper functionality, rather than a strict physical size limit.
  • USB Version: USB 2.0 or 3.0 drives are supported.
  • Other: The drive must be without a password.

In summary, a 256GB USB thumb drive is a safe bet for the 2025 Ford Ranger, provided it is formatted correctly and doesn't exceed the total file index limit.

exFAT or FAT32 is the solution. DO NOT USE NTFS. First try exFAT to give it a chance at accessing the full storage capacity of your drive. Sometimes exFAT won't work due to factors beyong your control. FAT32 will defintely work but you will lose the full storage capacity of the drive because FAT32 has a maximum file size limit of 4GB.
Be sure to copy off and preserve any important data before before reformatting it. The reformat process is destructive and will make all existing data unreadable. Regards.

Hmmm . . . maybe something has changed since I last formatted my 64GB USB Thumb Drives to FAT32, but the entire 64GB is there and available, full of music files, and working fine.
It works for me anyway.

(^ That was subtle sarcasm)

That is REAL strange. I'm a retired computer systems engineer. FAT32 is limited to 4GB. The OS is most likely reporting the total capacity of the drive but not accurately giving you the actual usable space. Do you know for sure you have more than 4GB of readable files on the drive ? If so, I would make a copy of the data on the drive just in case things go south and your data unexpectedly becomes corrupted and / or unreadable. Regards

FAT32 is indeed limited to 4GB - for individual File Size.
I think the Drive Size limitation is somewhere around 2TB.

Yes with a max 1TB partition size.. For some reason I had it in my head you had a bunch of long continuous music compilations greater than 4GB. LOL. Sorry about that bud. Regards :):)
